The jet age allowed Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) to promote worldwide tourism via its airline. The company’s New Horizons series advertised these intercontinental flights to such locations as Uruguay, one of the world’s purest democracies.” This 1965 color film opens with a montage of scenes from around the South American country as the narrator briefly tells us about the discovery of the country in the 1500s and how modern travelers are encouraged “to pause (and) take in the easy, congenial mood of Uruguay’s metropolis” as we see additional scenes from around the capital, Montevideo. Tourists are seen sipping on coffee and tea and we’re told near mark 03:00 how you can feel comfortable there because “the country is good natured without being light headed; intelligent without being ostentatious.” There are a variety of scenes of natives and tourists milling about the streets and sidewalks as a Latin beat plays in the background. There is a visit to the Plaza Artigas (mark 03:45) and the presidential palace before again turning to the streets and images of kids playing soccer as well the Monumento la Carreta, an epic sculpture depicting a wagon and straining oxen that honors of the ox-cart drivers of the 19th century (mark 05:00). We also learn of residents’ fondness for antique cars, semi-precious stones, and furs — which also appeal to tourists. At mark 07:39 we look at a typical ranch home just outside Montevideo as the residents are shown strolling the grounds before moving on to the farms of the countryside as cattle, sheep, and other animals are herded by gauchos as the narrator talks about the South American cowboys. As it nears its end the picture takes us on a tour of the country’s beaches and inviting waters as well as its frenetic nightlife. We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? Tell people what it is and what they can see by writing something for example: "01:00:12:00 -- President Roosevelt is seen meeting with Winston Churchill at the Quebec Conference." Mid shot of President Batlle 16. Wide of foreign ministers of China and Uruguay with document 17. Jiang reviewing document STORYLINE: Chinese President Jiang Zemin said on Tuesday that he trusts in the ability of his country and America to end their impasse over the spy plane collision, but said he still wants an apology. At only his second news briefing since the start on Thursday of a Latin American tour, Jiang said China's position was "sufficiently clear". Jiang said he stood by earlier demands that the United States apologise for the downing of the Chinese jet on 1 April. The pilot is missing and feared dead. Jiang's response to a question about the stalemate was terse. When asked what was the key to finding a way out, he alluded to his repeated demands for a U-S apology. U-S Secretary of State Colin Powell had said Washington was "sorry" for the Chinese fighter pilot still missing. Bush also offered his personal regrets at the apparent loss of life but the U-S government has stopped short of apologising. Chinese authorities have said they are not satisfied by the U-S response so far. The diplomatic showdown over the plane collision has overshadowed Jiang every step of the way in Latin America. Jiang's trip has been widely viewed as an attempt by Beijing to build support ahead of a vote at the U-N Commission on Human Rights on the communist country's human rights record. Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted the President of Uruguay, Tabare Vazquez, in Moscow on Thursday, where they penned an action plan for strengthening the cooperation between both countries. SOT, Vladimir Putin, President of Russia (Russian): "Uruguay is a reliable partner of Russia in Latin America. This year we are celebrating an important date, the 160th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. The general intention to develop bilateral relations was confirmed in a statement signed just now." SOT, Vladimir Putin, President of Russia (Russian): "We invited our partners to consider the possibility of purchasing the Sukhoi Superjet and MS-21 [mid-range Russian jet airliner]. We agreed to continue cooperation in the field of health." SOT, Vladimir Putin, President of Russia (Russian): "We exchanged views on a number of key issues of the international agenda. On many of them the position of Uruguay and Russia are close or coincide. This allows us to effectively cooperate at the UN, particularly in the Security Council." SOT, Tabare Vazquez, President of Uruguay (Spanish): "Above all, we have consolidated and diversified our ties with Russia, and that has a strategic fundamental importance for our small country. Within this framework, together with Mr. President of Russia, we did a comprehensive review of our bilateral agenda, which includes diverse areas of collaboration in the political, economic and cultural areas. Yesterday we were at the Bolshoi Theatre, Mr. President, it was amazing." SOT, Tabare Vazquez, President of Uruguay (Spanish): "All of these coinciding points, consensus and bilateral initiatives have been reflected in the action plan which we adopted during the present official visit, whose implementation will set the agenda between both countries for the future. It is a real kick, talking about kicking, next year Russia will host the Football World Cup. I hope we can watch together a final between Russia and Uruguay." Plane taking off STORYLINE: US President George W Bush left Uruguay on Sunday, heading for Colombia on the next leg of his Latin America tour. The visit will be the first by a US president since Ronald Reagan went there in 1982. Around 20 thousand police and heavily armed troops are reported to have virtually shut off downtown Bogota to guard against a possible rebel attack. Bush's visit is not without controversy. A political scandal involving Colombian President Alvaro Uribe could make it difficult for Bush to convince Congress that the country is worthy of getting the largest slice of US aid to the region. On Thursday, Uribe pleased with America to continue a 700 (m) million US dollar annual aid package that he says has helped stem the violence, corruption and drug trafficking in his country that finances anti-government guerillas. Over the past seven years, the US has sent four (b) billion US dollars to Colombia to combat the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). The 15 thousand-strong peasant army, backed with drug profits, is on the US list of terror groups. However Democrats, who control the US Congress, have expressed concern over how well the mostly military aid to Colombia is working. US lawmakers are also following developments in the political scandal in which eight of Uribe's close allies in the legislature and his hand-picked former domestic intelligence chief have been jailed recently for allegedly colluding with paramilitary groups. Bush however appears to have full confident in Uribe, telling journalists before beginning his Latin American tour that the Colombian President's pledge to fully prosecute wrongdoing shows he is a strong leader. After visiting Colombia, Bush travels to Guatemala on Monday and to Mexico on Tuesday and Wednesday. Several others would die before they could be rescued. Over the next two months, the survivors endured harsh winter weather, avalanches, & resorted to extreme measures to survive. The chartered flight departed on October 12th while transporting the Old Christians Club rugby union team along with members' friends & family from Montevideo, Uruguay heading for Santiago, Chile for a match. But due to bad weather conditions, the plane landed in Mendoza, Argentina to wait out the storm. It departed again the next day with its 45 passengers to finish its journey, which included flying over the Andes mountain range. Because of the weather, the pilot was unable to fly his plane over the mountains & instead, was forced to fly around them. On that particular day, however, the cloud cover was so intense that it caused the pilot to miscalculate where the plane was in relation to the mountains. As a result, the plane crashed into the side of a mountain near Malargue, Argentina, instantly killing 12 of its passengers upon impact. Within days, six more passengers—including the only doctor on board—died, leaving just 27 people alive. The survivors were left with very little food & water & virtually no winter clothing or footwear to protect them from the cold, snowy weather. Two medical students onboard the flight survived & were able to erect makeshift splints for various injuries, including broken arms & legs. When the plane did not arrive to Santiago as expected, Chile, Argentina, & Uruguay sent out search parties to find the missing plane. But because the plane was white, it blended in with the snow, making it nearly impossible to find. The search team was called off after eight days, a fact that the survivors were aware of since they had a transistor radio & heard the news of the search team giving up. Since the passengers had little food with no means of obtaining any more as there were no animals or vegetation to be found, the group resorted to eating the flesh of dead passengers to survive after much deliberation. Some of the passengers had reservations about doing this but eventually decided to do so in order to stay alive. One more month had passed & the survivors were still stranded when suddenly, an avalanche killed eight more people. And by December 12th–nearly two months after the crash, two men from the group decided to take a dangerous journey seeking help for the group. The trek lasted over a week & involved scaling a mountain then hiking down into a valley. But Nando Parrado & Roberto Canessa ultimately succeeded in making contact with another human being. On December 20th, 70 days after the crash, Parrado and Canessa came across three men on horseback, to whom they communicated their situation. The riders realized they were survivors of the crash & immediately sought help. In the end, the remaining survivors were rescued from the wreckage after an arduous rescue mission that concluded two days before Christmas. 16 passengers total survived 72 days after the crash. Since this incredible event, books, movies, & documentaries have been published recalling the crash & the ensuing struggle for survival. A feature film entitled Alive: Miracle in the Andes was also produced in 1993. Number 6: China Airlines Flight 611 May 25th, 2002: China Airlines Flight 611 is leaving Taiwan for Hong Kong when it disintegrates in mid-air, killing all 225 passengers on board. To this day, it remains the deadliest aviation accident in Taiwan's history. The plane was flying at approximately 35,000 feet 20 minutes after takeoff when they lost contact with air traffic control. The plane disintegrated in mid-air soon after, with the wreckage crashing into the Taiwan Strait. The crew—which was comprised of Captain Ching-Fong Yi, first officer Yea Shyong Shieh, & flight engineer Sen Kua Choa—were all very experienced & did not appear to make any errors that led to the accident. A recovery effort turned up the remains of 176 people, many of which were found floating in the ocean. An investigation into the
